Daily life in Camp

Maandag 20 Maart
Zoo alleen alles hebben moeten doen - arme schatten.  Waarom moet toch alles zoo gebeuren.

Monday 20 March
To have had to do everything alone - my poor darlings. Why is this happening. God must have wanted it this way. Did he want to spare me the shock - or did he want me to lose everything of value e.g. all the important documents the girls forgot to bring. And all my beautiful handcrafts and all my silver.

Dinsdag 21 Maart
Zoo moet b.v

Tuesday 21 March
We are getting to know the others - we notice  there is a feeling against the german women!! It doesn’t touch me and I won’t sully paper with all the talk on that subject. I got to know lots of nice women however, who nevertheless feel for a kraut. We are in very mixed company and so we must learn to fit in. For example ...

Woensday 22 Maart

Wednesday 22 March
Annemarie has to nurse the Verheul son. He is in hospital with boils. In Salatiga she would have been able to get excused from something like this. We had to hand in all our blank paper - all our  correspondence cards and drawing paper why? What else awaits us?

Thursday 23 March

Thursday 23 March
We cook for ourselves every morning - it is quite fun but it means getting up really early and making a fire, boiling coffee and stirring porridge.

Zaterdag 25 Maart
Dag vol emotie! Gemeen!
Saturday 25 March
An emotional day! Military Police went through our suitcases! All small mirrors were taken from us, one officer tore Annemarie’s powder compact apart! The worst they did to us was to take away my little table lamp that Reinier had made for me. I was very upset and furious!!! I very much grieve for just that loss! Gretel’s harmonica was also taken by them I heard later!!. How mean!

Maandag  27 Maart

Monday 27 March
All medicines are taken from us but those who had only a few may keep it.

Dinsdag 28 Maart

Tuesday 28 March
A high ranking official is coming to inspect everything because the camp is being transferred to the army. My whole section stays downstairs and the ------- ?? (not clear word) comes here as well. I have to replace Mrs de Bree and make sure that everyone stays in the room; but no one turned up and I get complimented because everything here was so quiet. They did go to the hospital. For the rest it was business as usual.

Donderdag 30 Maart

Thursday 30 March
Bangcarday - terrible!! Dead tired you want to relax a little after dinner - but the noise doesn’t allow it and you are a hunted animal! My limbs creak and my head is bursting! Only at night is there peace.  Then I don’t think about anything - not even my dear husband and my boys. That’s how worn out I am.

Vrijdag 31 Maart

There is a lot of gossip in the camp about us germans. Hate and envy rule the day. Many ladies who were nice to us in the beginning it is now clear were only after the supplies they expected to arrive. When these were not forthcoming that was the end of their friendship. People just don’t learn a thing in camp.

Zaterdag 1 April

Saturday 1 April
The april fools day pranks start early in the morning, some are very successful. F.i from a boy: Extra food!! Everyone runs up to hear: April Fool. It was a cruel joke because everyone is hungry and we have far too litttle to eat and far too few vegetables and fruits.

Comments

  1. Couldn't figure out the meaning of the word bangcardag (30 March entry) and phoned Gretel. She said it was likely bongcardag - bongcar was a word meaning big clean-up. That seems a likely explanation as it happened after the official visit to prepare for the camp being handed over to the army administration. As for the noise Meta complains about, Gretel said there were some 30 people - women, children - to a room, so with all the talking and other activities it could get very noisy.

About this blog

I have created this blog to read and communicate to my family members the content of the diaries, notes, letters and other writings I have from my grandmother Meta Peelen-Reith. Meta lived in the first half of the 20th century and experienced two world wars. The last one killed her when she succumbed to the effects of the malnutrition and dysentery she endured in the Japanese Concentration Camp on Java that she was interned in in 1944. She died on 25th August 1945, ten days after Japan surrendered. Meta kept a diary in those camp days, using a school exercise book. She took a great risk to keep this diary, because paper and pencil was forbidden by the Japanese camp guards and punishment was brutal for those who transgressed this rule.  The diary is written in Dutch in pencil, and overwritten in ink later, it seems, and it is sometimes difficult to read, because the writing is faded and smudged in places. As I go through the diary I'll provide both the Dutch original t

Her last portrait

I've been sorting family photos and documents and found this pencil drawing of Meta done in 1944 in Camp Ambarawa. It might have been done soon after she arrived in the camp because she looks quite well, though thinner in the face than could be seen in earlier photos. The artist was Mrs D van den Palm. I wonder what happened to her. Perhaps she did not survive camp either. Meta Peelen-Reith passed away in Camp Ambarawa on 25th August 1945.
